It was announced earlier this year that filming had begun on the film version and ‘remake’ of the beach lifeguard classic Baywatch. The film is set to be released on the 19th May 2017 and has huge stars attached to it such as Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The plot of the film, which is being directed by Seth Gordon,  is that two unlikely prospective lifeguards vie for jobs alongside the buff bodies who patrol a beach in California.  Dwayne will be playing the iconic figure of David Hasselfhoffs character in the remake and that role was one of the things that made him who he is today.

The original television show ran between 1989 – 1999 and had some bumpy rocks along the way to becoming successful. Originally the show was cancelled after one season when it was placed 73rd out of 103 shows in the seasonal ratings and also because the studio that made it went out of business.

As wikipedia states:

Feeling the series still had potential, Hasselhoff along with creators and executive producers Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonann revived it for the first-run syndication market in 1991. Hasselhoff was given the title of executive producer for his work on bringing the show back. The series was hugely successful, especially internationally.

The television show ended up having a spin off show called Baywatch Nights and a Reunion movie called Baywatch Hawaii:Wedding. The show eventually ended up having to move away from California and filmed in Hawaii due to production costs rising in California.
