Today we look at an American Girl Group that was around in the early 2000s until 2008, and had a successful career during that time. Today we look at the girl group 3LW.
3LW which stood for 3 Little Women were formed in 1999 and was made up of members Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams and Naturi Naughton. Their first single ‘No More (baby I’ma Do Right)’ was released in autumn of the year 2000 and it did well in the charts and was followed by the song ‘Playas Gon’ Play’ in 2001.
Their first album was released in 2000 and was a self titled alum and went on to sell 1.3 million copies in the United States alone. In this time they also went on tour with Destinys Child, Nelly, Eve and Jessica Simpson on the MTV Total Request Live Tour.
In 2002 the girls spent most of the year in a recording studio laying down tracks for their second album which was set to be called ‘Same Game, Different Rules’. The lead single off the album was going to be a song called ‘Uh oh’ however the record label felt it did not have enough urban appeal. Some of the tracks from the new album were also leaked online and this lead to the record label considering dropping them from the label. However, the fans fought back and started a campaign called ‘Never Let Go of 3LW’ and it saved the group.
The girls returned in 2002 with a new single produced by P-Diddy called I Do (Wanna Get Close To You). The group got into more trouble when it was announced that Naturi had left the group due to bad arguments that had been happening behind the scenes. The new album release was pushed back and when it did go into the chart it had disappointing record sales reaching only number 15 in the charts.
When it was revealed that Naughton apparently got forced to leave the group, the two remaining members started to receive death threats that they had to have more security. With Naughton leaving the group it also meant that album sales started to dramatically decline. In 2003 they held auditions to find a third member and hired Jessica Benson – apparently if they hadn’t of found her they would of had to declare bankruptcy. In 2003 they also left their record label Epic.
The girls tried to release another album after the second however major cracks started to appear – the new album was pushed back to 2007, because of their involvement in the Disney Channels show Cheetah Girls. The delay started to cause major conflicts in between the band and the third album was never released.
So let’s spend today looking at some of their hits from happier times.
