So there I was, one sunny afternoon, working away whilst listening to the archive episodes of The Josh Widdicombe Podcast and a name of a girl band i had never heard of popped up. Now anyone that knows Josh Widdicombes humour will know that he is the boffin of the nineties but when I heard that he hadnt even heard of them then I knew this was a band i HAD to look into for Forgotten Pop! So ladies and gentlemen, today we look at the girl group 21st Century Girls.

The 21st Century Girls which were originally called She Devil, were formed in 1996 and was made up of Leanne Garner, Fiona Garner, Kate Turley, Meriam Mohamad and Charlotte Fendek. They were the first group to ever sign to Simon Fullers record label 19 Recordings when they were all just aged 14-16 years old in 1999.

To promote the band (and I suppose in some ways, to promote the record label) they went on a huge publicity campaign around the UK to promote their debut single “21st Century Girls”. When the single was releesed it reached number 16 in the UK charts. They went on to release another single that was only available in Japan called “Teenage Attack.” This lead to an album also being released called “21st Century Girls” that was only released in Japan as well.

The group broke up in 2000 when they were dropped from their record label. So lets spend this afternoonb reflecting on a group that even avid fans of the nineties forgot.
