Trivia

+ Although the show is largely based on Adam Goldberg’s family, they had three sons: Eric, Barry, and Adam. ABC executives told the creators to make one of the siblings a girl because the show would be funnier.

+ The sweaters worn by Beverly belonged to the real Beverly Goldberg.

+ During the first season episode “For Your Own Good”, which shows the character of Adam being bullied on the school bus by J.C. Spink, the real-life Spink plays the school bus driver.

+ Shares name with one of TV’s earliest TV sitcoms The Goldbergs (1949) of 1949. The pilot is the only episode that listed a specific year. After that one, the narrator would always state “it was 1980-something…” This was done so the writers could use any ’80s references without worrying about what year they were representing.

+ In Adam’s bedroom there is a poster, “Revenge of the Jedi”. For a time, the movie was to be released with this title and thousands of pre-release teaser posters had been distributed. Before the release, though, George Lucas felt that Jedi knights wouldn’t seek revenge and the title was changed to Return of the Jedi. Original Revenge teaser posters are now worth a fair amount of money.

+ Even though Hayley Orrantia plays the older sister she is actually four months younger than Troy Gentile who plays her younger brother.

+ George Segal’s name on the show is Albert, aka “Pops.” George Segal had a role in the movie Look Who’s Talking, where his character’s name is also Albert.
