The most recent trend in the travel show is to attach a comedy to it and there are so many – some serious, some spoofs, some that are the dynamics of an actual scripted comedy and others because they were one big practical joke! Travel Thursdays have just got bigger as we are now adding a comedic spin on it where we are looking at the comedian versus the travel.
Today we look at a show that was a one off documentary that was initially aired on BBC Wales in 2013 and was shot on hand held cameras – today we look at Rhod Gilbert vs Kilimanjaro.
The documentary was originally never planned for television and was just filmed so that comedians Rhod Gilbert and his welsh buddy Barry Castagnola could have a record of climbing 19,340ft. The reason behind the exhausting journey was that they were raising money for Valindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.
In interviews that were released at the time Rhod admitted that he forgot or didn’t realise that he was being filmed by Barry most of the time and unlike other television documentaries there are few angles and really delves into the raw reality of climbing such a beast. There are many moments when the real emotions of Rhod appear on camera and may be a side fans have not seen of him before.
The guys succeeded and the trek raised over £250,000 – if you are a fan of Rhod Gilbert then this is a show you really must spend the time watching. Whilst he may not be the funny man a lot of people adore him for, you get to see another side of him that you never saw before.
